How much do pet friendly hotels in Carmel-by-the-Sea charge for a dog?
Stated pet fees in Carmel-by-the-Sea run $40 to $250 per stay at 3 hotels and $30 per night at Hofsas House Hotel, across 4 of the 17 we list (November 2026). A missing fee on the other hotels does not mean there is none, and we hold no hotel stating that pets stay free.
La Playa Hotel (from $1,223 a night, the highest of the 17) and L'Auberge Carmel, Relais & Chateaux (from $1,167) charge the $250 per-stay fee. Room prices were sampled for a stay three weeks out. Carmel Wayfarer Inn, whose from-price of $341 is the median of the 17 hotels, charges $40 per stay.
For a stay of two nights or more, the nightly fee at Hofsas House Hotel costs more than the flat $40 at Carmel Wayfarer Inn, at similar room prices (from $332 against $341). Pet policies change. Confirm with the hotel when you book.
Which Carmel-by-the-Sea hotels accept large dogs, cats or two pets?
In Carmel-by-the-Sea (November 2026), Carmel Green Lantern Inn (50 lb) and Carmel Resort Inn (40 lb) state the highest weight limits, and we hold no statement that any of the 17 accepts cats. The other four of the 6 limits we hold stop at 30 lb or less, down to 24 lb at Briarwood Inn and Carmel Fireplace Inn.
A dog over 50 lb clears none of the 6 limits we hold. Carmel Resort Inn starts at $177, the lowest of the 17; Carmel Green Lantern Inn at $634. We hold no limit for the rest, which does not mean they have none.
Cat owners have the least to go on: Le Petit Pali at 8th Ave, a Member of Design Hotels, Carmel Fireplace Inn, Briarwood Inn and Carmel Resort Inn state dogs only. For the others we hold no cat policy either way, so ask the hotel before you book.
Of the 4 hotels that state a maximum number of pets per room, Carmel River Inn & Cottages allows 3, the highest figure we hold. The Quail Lodge, Carmel Green Lantern Inn and L'Auberge Carmel, Relais & Chateaux allow 2.
Are dogs allowed on Carmel Beach?
Yes: as of November 2026, the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea's beach rules allow dogs off leash on Carmel Beach, as long as they stay under voice control. The city code it cites sets the test: your dog stays within 25 feet at all times, returns to within three feet on command, and stays within three feet of you when others are present. You must also carry or attach a chain, strap or cord for quick leashing.
The leash goes back on as you leave. The city asks you to leash your dog at the bottom of the stairways or sand ramps, and its rules require a leash on the Scenic Pathway. Waste bags are provided at the access points and stairways; do not leave them on the beach.
Carmel Beach has nine access stairways from the Scenic Pathway; the city's page, updated May 2024, lists those at 10th Avenue and 12th Avenue as closed. There are no lifeguards, and the city warns of waves, undertow and riptides.
Where are some dog friendly places in Carmel-by-the-Sea?
Beyond Carmel Beach, the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea allows dogs under voice control at the 34-acre Mission Trail Nature Preserve (November 2026), which has hiking trails, a native plant garden and pet waste bags. Visit Carmel also points to the Fountain of Woof, a drinking fountain for dogs at the Carmel Plaza.
At Carmel River State Beach and Garrapata State Park, California State Parks requires a leash of 6 feet maximum at all times and says dogs must not be left unattended.
- Carmel River State Beach: dogs on leash, one mile south of Ocean Avenue from southbound Highway 1. California State Parks flags Western snowy plover resting areas in late winter and early spring.
- Caution at Monastery Beach, part of Carmel River State Beach: California State Parks warns that "swimming, wading or walking near the sanctuary can be extremely dangerous."
- Garrapata State Park: dogs on leash only on the beach at Gate 19 and the trails leading to it, per California State Parks.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve also forbids leaving dogs in parked vehicles, so a dog cannot wait in the car there.
California State Parks lists Andrew Molera State Park and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park as allowing no dogs beyond the day-use parking lot. At Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, dogs may use the Warden's Path, the River Path, the day-use lots and the campground, but no other trail.
